You Think 20 Seconds Goes Fast? You Should Try TABATA!
The buzz around High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is real, the huge training and health gains to be made with this type of training method mean it is taking the fitness industry by storm with a workout that can be carried out in a short amount of time at high intensity.
Dr Izumi Tabata, a Japanese physician developed a HIIT structure on steroids! (He wasn't on steroids when he developed it, it's just an expression to highlight that Tabata is off the wall!) The work and rest periods are shorter than those used in standard HIIT workouts but as it keeps your heart rate elevated, you can gain a lot in just 4 minutes!
So Tabata in short is 20 seconds high intensity work followed by 10 seconds rest and repeated 8 times. 4 minutes in total.
20 seconds doesn't sound a lot and I bet you think it goes quickly until you try Tabata, when you are working hard it seems an age and trust me the 10 seconds rest is even shorter! You would swear it has only been seconds before you are back into the work interval. However, in 4 short minutes you will be sweating and reaching for your water bottle or the nearest exit!
As this workout is so efficient, it is great for the time conscious. Parents, full time workers or the student who needs to fit a quick workout in before they go out on the town! It works for anyone and everyone and as it is your maximum effort it is very personal and individual.
You can do a Tabata workout with anything from cardio (running, rowing, cycling for example) to body weight exercises like press ups, squats or burpees. Use a watch or your phone to time or even better, get an app, there are some cool free Tabata apps that keep count of everything for you and beep when you need to start and stop working.
Go smash it up and have fun with a new style of workout to keep things interesting!
