The Truth About The Fat Burning Zone!

Right, before I get into this, lets take a quick look at the word misconception; 'an incorrect view or opinion which is based on false understanding' is how it is described. Now, lets apply that to the Fat Burning Zone. Stick with me on this and all will become clear as to why the age old advice of doing long steady aerobic exercise in the fat burning zone is not the best way to shift a few pounds!

It is true, the fat burning zone does exist, but it has been taken completely out of context and people have been following advice which may not be helping them to meet their weight loss goals. To put it simply there is a better way!

Lets break it down:

In the fat burning zone the body burns a greater percentage of fat. When training at low intensity you could burn 50% of your calories from fat, sounds good ey! However......

At higher intensity training such as HIIT (you have all heard of this new fitness craze; High Intensity Interval Training) whilst you may only burn 30-35% of your overall calories from fat, you burn more total calories and therefore more calories from fat in total!

In addition, (yes, thats not it) as your metabolism (basically the amount of calories you burn each day - Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR) increases dependent on the amount of muscle you have, including higher intensity training and resistance training into your workouts helps you to build lean muscle, developing your metabolism which means you continue to burn more calories after you finish exercising! How cool is that?

If you keep smashing out the long steady aerobic training to get into the fat burning zone your body is smart and will actually adapt and learn to store fat and your metabolism will not change. By adding higher intensity training and resistance training and mixing up your sessions (which can still include continuous aerobic training as part of a varied programme) you develop your musculature, raise your metabolism and unlock the code to long term fat loss, achieving the body you desire!
