What Is The Functional Fitness Frenzy!
I am guessing you have heard of the phrase Functional Fitness? I am all for it, it is a training method which looks at training your muscles to work together, preparing you better to take on your normal activities in life. It is extremely effective training which is also designed to improve specific sports performance.
You train muscles in groups such as upper body, lower body and full body and the movements require good core stability which helps with a full overall workout. The multi-plane, multi-joint movements demand your body to utilise the core to build total body power, helping you to carry out activities such as climbing the stairs, lifting and carrying heavy shopping or pushing a wheelbarrow when you decide to do some gardening.
So functional fitness training is focused on practical all round strength and the transferability to the real world. Not the ability to lift a certain amount of weight on a gym machine with a specific muscle or muscles which are isolated so nothing else is required to work; no stabiliser muscles or core.
So how do you start?
The first place to start would be to be able to control your own bodyweight. You don't need a fancy gym or any equipment for this. Can you squat, keeping your heels on the ground? Then can do you a squat with your feet together? How about a one legged squat keeping your balance? Could you progress your exercises and start to add lunges, push ups and burpees?
