Micronutrients! Important Little Dudes!
Micronutrients are needed in small amounts in the human body but they are important little dudes! They are more commonly known as vitamins and minerals and we need them to ensure a normal metabolism and for growth and development.
Essential nutrients for the body which are either not made by us so we need to ingest them, or we only make them in really small amounts. Food is the main way we get these essential micronutrients and if we do not get enough, we end up with a vitamin deficiency. The first stage must always be to get vitamins from our food, supplementation can be used but only if properly understood.
Vitamins are broken down into fat soluble (A, D, E & K) and water soluble (B, C & Folic Acid). You need to eat foods containing these every day!
Minerals play a key role in our body and as with vitamins we need to get them from the food we eat, our body either produces only very small amounts or none at all so it is important our diet is varied and nourishes our body so we get the minerals we need to thrive. Minerals are needed for strong bones and teeth, controlling the bodies fluid inside and outside our cells and for turning the food that we eat into energy!
Magnesium for example is an essential mineral and one most athletes need, it is a common deficiency but it is ok as magnesium can be found in avocado, bananas, dark chocolate and spinach to name a few foods. You can also get magnesium through supplements.
