2018 Was A Top Year For Catherine!
It gives me great pleasure to write a 5 star review for Fay Jordan and Trail Tribe, a personal trainer and exercise group that has revolutionised my view on fitness and lifestyle. I had been struggling to get motivated and back into exercise, watching my weight creeping up but not feeling any joy in dragging myself out for a solo jog/walk. In a local Banchory shop in January 2018, I noticed flyers advertising Trail Tribe, an outdoor-based fitness group. I liked the idea of this so I contacted Fay and swiftly received the most encouraging and motivating reply! I had described my low level of fitness and fully expected to be advised to come back when fitter - however I couldn’t have been more wrong. Fay had spaces left for the Sunday Scotly session at 9am and myself and my husband Kevan were booked in! I thought “oh no, I’ve gone and done it now and this is gonna hurt”. Nevertheless, on the first Sunday in February 2018 I (literally) dragged Kevan (what a trooper) through Scolty car park and we met the phenomenon that is Fay Jordan. While it was a tough session, I felt so empowered physically challenging myself, and was encouraged by Fay and the other Trail Tribers that day. When Fay’s husband Lee sent photos of us lunging with logs I was so proud of myself. I have been a loyal Sunday morning attendee ever since and words cannot describe the joy I feel being out in the early morning fresh forest air with such a fantastic bunch of people, my fellow Tribers.
I had minimal sporting interest prior to this, however the Trail Tribe sessions provide a varied and interesting whole body workout, with lots of laughs and good banter thrown in! I was delighted with how my fitness improved as a result of this. The ethos of being outside, getting to know the local forest trails while doing strength, conditioning and cardio training captured my interest like never before. So, 2018 went onto become the most active year of my entire life to date, with the brilliant company of fellow Trail Tribers and encouragement from Fay and Lee. My medal haul from 2018 includes the Balmoral 10k, 26 mile Kiltwalk, the Walking With The Wounded Triple Crown event over three Munros including Lochnagar, the Crathes Half Marathon, the Banchory Beast Race and the 15 mile Illuminator. Just even writing that I can’t quite believe it!
A huge achievement for me was completing the Crathes Half, my first Half Marathon! Fay prepared a fascinating personalised training plan for me, with a method to increasing endurance ability alongside increasing strength, core and speed training. I had so much faith in the plan, as it was a holistic, researched, scientific approach to achieving my goal. I loved following the plan, and became familiar with acronyms EMOM and AMRAP, bought a Swiss Training ball for my core sessions and felt quite the pro! Previously I had focused on my pace and struggled to run without stopping. However, Fay’s plan introduced me to concepts such as interval training, hill reps, the importance of mobility, core and flexibility as a runner (who knew!) and crucially for me, running within heart rate zones. This was significant as in finding “my pace” at running I finally found my love of running. With this plan I trained to pop out a sprint when needed, but found a peace and meditation at my running pace, which I am so grateful for. Race day came and brought its challenges, gifts and lessons as every run does; it was an unexpectedly hot day and a fast course of runners! Despite this, thanks to Fay’s plan and all my training, I had earned an inner confidence that kept me going for the 13.1 miles; I knew I could do it and I did!
On a final note, as well as helping me achieve my personal goals, Trail Tribe has also brought many a team event into my and Kevan’s life that we otherwise would not have heard of or been part of. We have had fabulous banter while completing some epic events and 2018 was a year that we will never forget! I am so excited and looking forward to what 2019 has to bring... : )
